چکیده

In a world where resources are scarce and urban areas consume the vast majority of these resources, it is vital to make cities greener and more sustainable. A smart city is a city in which information and communications technology are merged with traditional infrastructures, coordinated and integrated using new digital technologies. The increasing amount of waste generated, and the collection and treatment of waste poses a major challenge to modern urban planning in general, and to smart cities in particular. To cope with this problem, automated vacuum waste collection (AVWC) uses air suction on a closed network of underground pipes to transport waste from the drop off points scattered throughout the city to a central collection point, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the inconveniences of conventional methods (odours, noise, etc.). Since a significant part of the cost of operating AVWC systems is energy consumption, we have developed a model with the aim of applying constraint programming technology to schedule the daily emptying sequences of the drop off points in such a way that energy consumption is minimized. In this paper we describe how the problem of deciding the drop off points that should be emptied at a given time can be modeled as a constraint integer programming (CIP) problem. Moreover, we report on experiments using real data from AVWC systems installed in different cities that provide empirical evidence that CIP offers a suitable technology for reducing energy consumption in AVWC. ∗Corresponding author Email addresses: [email protected] (Cèsar Fernández), [email protected] (Felip Manyà), [email protected] (Carles Mateu), [email protected] (Francina Sole-Mauri) Preprint submitted to Environmental Modelling & Software February 13, 2014

Solving The Automated Vacuum Waste Collection Optimization Problem

Automated vacuum waste collection (AVWC) uses air suction on a closed network of underground pipes to transport waste from the drop off points scattered throughout the city to a central collection point, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the inconveniences of conventional methods (odors, noise, . . . ). Since a significant part of the cost of operating AVWC systems is energy consumption, we...

Approximate dynamic programming for automated vacuum waste collection systems

The collection and treatment of waste poses a major challenge to modern urban planning, particularly to smart cities. To cope with this problem, a cost-effective alternative to conventional methods is the use of Automated Vacuum Waste Collection (AVWC) systems, using air suction on a closed network of underground pipes to transport waste from the drop off points scattered throughout the city to...

The Automated Vacuum Waste Collection Optimization Problem

One of the most challenging problems on modern urban planning and one of the goals to be solved for smart city design is that of urban waste disposal. Given urban population growth, and that the amount of waste generated by each of us citizens is also growing, the total amount of waste to be collected and treated is growing dramatically (EPA 2011), becoming one sensitive issue for local governm...

Environmental and Economic Evaluation of Municipal Solid Waste Management using WAGS Model – Air Pollutant Emission and Fuel Economy in Waste Collection Sector

Solid waste collection, transfer and transportation (SWCTT) is a fundamental component of solid waste management systems that contributes to both the costs and environmental emissions associated with managing solid waste. The objective of this study is to project the fuel consumption and fuel costs of SWCTT in Tehran from 2018 to 2032. A further objective is to evaluate the air pollutant emissi...

Evaluation of Energy Consumption of Potato Slices Drying Using Vacuum-Infrared Method

Objective: The main objective pursued in this paper is to investigate the energy consumption for drying of potato slices using vacuum-infrared drying method. Methods: Drying of potato slices with the thicknesses of 1, 2 and 3 mm were conducted at vacuum levels of zero (without vacuum), 20, 80 and 140 mm [Hg], infrared radiation at power levels of 100, 150 and 200 W in the three repetition. Resu...
